BA Dissertation The Relationship
between Fine Art and Applied Art, Abstract Naomi L. Ballance The aims of this document are to explore the relationship between fine art and applied art, and to highlight the differences between the two art forms in an attempt to discover the reasons for their remaining separation. A selective history of the role of decorative art in relation to fine art will be established by reference to artworks and theorists that illustrate their differing and varying positions. The Renaissance will be examined, as it is suggested that the separation between the fine arts and the decorative arts arose during this period. Modernism will be discussed as the instigator of the belief in truth to materials and the abandonment of ornamentation and how attempts were made to elevate craft to the level of fine art will be considered. Issues of 'high' art and 'low' art will be addressed as well as the role of gender and subjectivity within decorative art. All will be discussed in relation to the post-modern climate and today's contemporary art context. Through critical appraisals of various artists' work that utilises methods of craft techniques, the status of handicraft and decoration within contemporary fine art will be examined demonstrating where the dividing line is presently drawn. The role of media, the role of the gallery and the validity of conceptual content in applied arts are aspects that will be dealt with. The result of a conversation with textile artist and designer, Joanna Kinnersly-Taylor will form a main part of my argument, as her views on context; concept, method, and methodology are examined with regard to other artists and the cultural condition of today. Contemporary fine artist Michael Raedecker will be closely considered given that he uses craft based techniques without it being identified as such. Conversely, Tracey Emin, who appropriates the symbolic qualities of textiles by utilising it as a method to reference issues of feminism and domesticity, and Chris Ofili who uses decoration and textile techniques to comment on social and cultural issues, deal with different issues.
